Beneficial Microbial Compost Tea

The soil-food-web refers to a series of conversions of energy as organisms live and consume one another within the underground soil environment.

When organisms decompose complex materials, or consume other organisms, the nutrients are converted and are made available to plants and other soil organisms. In a single teaspoon of soil, there are billions of microscopic living organisms that act as the builders and recyclers of this living soil system: bacteria, fungi, viruses, algae, protozoa, mites, nematodes, earthworms, ants, maggots, insects, larvae, and larger animals. All these organisms play key roles in the soil food web and are the driving force of all live on earth, particularly plants.

Often times, high amounts of synthetic fertilizers, erosion or simply poor management can be detrimental to living organisms in your soil. Reintroducing living microbes found in compost can help rebuild your soils “food web.” There are many types of compost that gardeners can create on their own or buy from a local garden center, offering a range of derived sources from aged manure or mulch. The most desired compost is derived from worm castings.

Worm castings have many benefits for plants and purposes in the soil food web. They can:

  • Help plants grow in acidic and alkaline conditions and can actually prevent extreme pH levels

  • Increase water retention by forming aggregates in the soil

  • Fix heavy metals, preventing their intake by plants

  • Fight off pests and disease: the humus, organic matter found in castings, can extract toxins and harmful organisms from the soil

  • Stimulate microorganism growth and consequently plant growth by providing new organisms and a food source

Compost tea is the easiest, cost-effective way of bringing life back to your soil. Thousands of beneficial microbes all working together for the benefit of your plant. All the microbes available in compost can be brewed out into a solution of living liquid.
